Ah, the new year is upon us and it’s time to review the old year and think about changes we’d like to make to better ourselves. Although losing weight and stopping smoking are two of the most common New Year’s resolutions, I hope you’ll take some time to think about how you can improve and refresh your unique beauty and style.
It may seem superficial, but we know that our appearance impacts our personal, social and professional lives. We also know that how we feel influences how we look and vice versa — a phenomena called beauty self-esteem. Although we’d like to believe “what is inside counts most,” scientific evidence, as well as common sense, tells us that an appealing appearance positively impacts our lives.
Here are five beauty and style resolutions for 2017.
- Find the right look for you.
Does your personal style really reflect who you are on the inside? Does it match your personality? Do you feel comfortable and “at home” in the clothes you wear? - Reevaluate your color palette.
If you “had your colors done” back in the four seasons days, it’s time to upgrade to the newer system that’s more accurate and provides more categories to better tailor the color palettes to your specific coloring. It’s also time for color reevaluation if you’re coloring your hair differently, have started to go gray, have changed your eye color with colored contacts or you used to tan all the time but no longer do. All of these things can shift you to a different color palette.
- Choose styles that flatter your body shape.
Very few women have that perfect body. Who defines “perfect” anyway? Yet you can play up the good aspects of your figure and disguise flaws by choosing styles and fabrics according to your body shape and vertical proportions. The goal is to create the illusion of balance which is key to looking your best.
- Improve your shape (and your health!) with regular exercise.
This is not about losing weight per se, but rather about finding an activity that you enjoy that gets you moving and savoring life. You’ve probably heard that finding a type of exercise you enjoy is key to sticking with it, which is true. However, it also gives you something to look forward to, increases your self confidence, keeps you looking and feeling young, and improves your overall health – bone density, circulation, fat loss, flexibility/mobility. Next thing you know, your clothes are fitting better and that’s just the icing on the cake.
- Try something new.
It’s easy to get in a style rut. Maybe you don’t have the budget for new pieces every season. Maybe you don’t have the time to shop. Maybe you’ve found the look that works for you and it’s just easier to keep grabbing the same outfits over and over. Maybe you’re afraid of taking fashion risks. If so, consider working with an image consultant or style coach. Adding a new element to your style will freshen your look and energize you. Try new combinations of tops and bottoms in your closet. Add a funky or colorful accessory – statement necklace, scarf or shoes. If you’ve taken steps 1, 2 and 3 above, you may have some totally new fashion choices to try that will open your eyes to the possibilities.
