Becoming a curly girl

Hair-Romance-How-to-style-curly-hair-for-frizz-free-curls-5Do you have unpleasant childhood memories of your Mom brushing and yanking your hair out of your head in an attempt to get it under control?

Does the least amount of humidity turn your hair into a frizzy mass?

Do you wake up with epic bed head?

If you answered yes to these questions, you know you’re a naturally curly girl, but did you know there’s a way to care for your hair that will give you beautiful, healthy curls and will reduce frizz and time spent trying to tame it?

Welcome to the Curly Girl Method

For those of us who’ve spent our lives trying to conform to the smooth, silky, straight hair beauty standard, Curly Girl: The Handbook by Lorraine Massey was a revelation. Using the correct products and techniques, a naturally curly girl can learn to accept and embrace her natural curl pattern, enhance her curls and avoid the heat damage of flat irons, curling irons and hot rollers. Wow. I can be who I really am AND spend less time styling my hair every day? Count me in.

If you’re interested in trying the curly girl method – often abbreviated CG – Massey’s book as a great way to start. The curly girl revolution has spawned numerous websites, blogs, Facebook pages and YouTube videos. You’ll quickly have information overload, so my advice is to keep it simple at the beginning. Find a shampoo, conditioner and curl cream or gel for your curl type and work on perfecting the basic use of these three key products before you start experimenting with tons of different products and techniques. If you’re constantly changing products and application methods, it will be hard to know what’s working and what’s not. If you don’t have the book, here’s a great basic guide to get started.
